CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
Another New Year has started and I am pleased to introduce our latest Newsletter which will show you, amongst other things, what the hard-working committee is organising for you in the early part of the year.
A warm welcome to those new members who are receiving this for the first time. I hope that you will have a long and happy association with us.
Our Club had a successful year in 2010 and many activities were oversubscribed. We had a record turnout of over 350 attending the Christmas Lunch at the new suite at Lancashire Cricket Club and this was again excellently organised by Peter and Eileen Lamb.
In November I attended the annual Chairman's Briefing at Head Office, London, and you will have seen a report about this in the last edition of connection magazine. The Bank remains committed to maintaining contact with its pensioner clubs by means of these briefings. We could not function without its generous financial support. Even in the recent economic climate, there has not been any diminution in this. In response to comments from clubs, the Bank has now set up a contact point for clubs and their members to provide feedback (positive as well as negative) on their current customer service experiences. The contact point is Leanne Smith of Head Office Customer Relations whose number is 020 7116 2321 and whose email address is leanne.smith1@barclays.com . The Division, which is now known as Global Retail Banking, is continually looking for ways to make the customer experience better.
I have had a number of queries recently about the Bank's services for will preparation and estate administration. These remain as very useful perks for us and I have added details about them later in this Newsletter.
May I just share with you a point that I was reminded of recently? We usually think of widows/ers as continuing to receive a half share of the pension of the late member. In practice, the continuing pension may be a little higher than this since any commutation and clawback in the member's pension is likely to be ignored.
-2-
Congratulations to Graham Knox of Rochdale who was recently presented with an award by the Princess Royal on behalf of the Royal Yachting Club to which he has given many years of service.
At last October's AGM, Jon Hodges was elected to the Committee. A keen sportsman, he will be dealing with our walks and our Golf Day.
I send you all best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
Michael Horwood

TREASURER'S REPORT
Another year successfully concluded, with a wide and expanding variety of events funded, thanks to the generous support of the Bank. With their help, we intend to continue this policy in 2011, and already have outings planned that we hope will prove attractive and will receive your full support.
In this respect, we do have to gamble on occasions on the popularity of an event, and we have to buy tickets well in advance to ensure we get the best deals available. Your continuing involvement is therefore very welcome.
This year saw a record attendance at the annual Christmas lunch at Old Trafford. We booked 362 meals and in the event 350 people attended.
It is very difficult to find venues that can cope with our numbers, and provide the standard we expect. However in preparing the year-end figures for the Committee and the Bank, I have calculated that each meal booked at Old Trafford, including drinks, cost the club £32. We charge our members £6 each. The end result, with costs at Old Trafford continuing to rise significantly each year, is that 70% of the grant received from the Bank goes to subsidise this event.
We are all very conscious that the Re-union lunch is welcomed by a large number of our members. That said, the Committee will, in 2011, be increasing the cost to members to £10. We still feel this gives excellent value and will bring this event in line with our other activities.
If you have any thoughts on this, please contact me direct.
Rod Dean

WELFARE REPORT
As ever thanks go to the willing band of Welfare Visitors who help to keep the Welfare Scheme running smoothly.
We have over 70 Visitors who cover a similar number of geographical regions throughout the district. Each member of the Club should have a Visitor allocated to them & be in possession of a contact card showing the Visitor's details. If any Club member does not know who their Visitor is then they should contact me, please, following which the necessary information will be provided.
We try to match Visitors geographically with the area that they look after. Whilst we do have one or two unplaced volunteers at present we are now particularly looking for one person to help in the Oldham area. If you are located near Oldham, & are interested in learning more about this non-onerous & satisfying role, please ring the number given below for more information. An honorarium is paid to each Welfare Visitor & is ample to cover normal expenses.
-3-
The Club continues to rely very much on its network of Welfare Visitors plus other retired staff for the early receipt of information regarding changes in circumstances of its members. Any changes of address etc should be advised to either the Hon. Secretary or Welfare Chairman in order that the database may be kept up to date. Other changes are important too such as a member becoming seriously ill or having major financial difficulties. In many instances we are able to provide some form of support but unless we know about it we can do nothing. Please help us to assist members wherever we can.
Many thanks for your support.

BARCLAYS BANK TRUST COMPANY LIMITED (now usually referred to as BARCLAYS WEALTH ESTATES AND TRUSTS) - HOW IT CAN HELP YOU.
A reminder of a service that you sometimes don't want to think about but which could be of immense value to your family later. There is a valuable fee concession you may not realise is available to you.
BARCLAYS ESTATES AND TRUSTS - administer estates and help to prepare wills.
- reduced rates for will writing service.
- 100% fee concession on estate administration. **
** (Worth a lot of money to families-one of the most valuable concessions we have left!) N.B. The full service fee charged by the Bank for a gross estate value of £200,001 - £300,000 is £8,000 + VAT (as from July 2010).
ESTATE ADMINISTRATION - Barclays Estates and Trusts can act as executor of a will free of its normal administration fees (except out of pocket expenses) for Barclays pensioners (except deferred pensioners) and their spouses.
If there is no will (intestacy), or the will appoints other executors, they may still be able to deal with the estate under a fee concession (or a discount) depending on the situation.
WILLS - Barclays Will Writing Service is offered in conjunction with Irwin Mitchell solicitors, one of the leading providers of will writing services in the UK. The service is available by post or online for anybody living in England and Wales.
A 50% discount is available to Barclays staff and pensioners:
i.e. £45 for a single will (£90 is the standard service price)
£67.50 for mirror wills (£135 is the standard service price).
If your existing will otherwise meets your requirements but you wish to change the executor to Barclays, the codicil will be free. Holders of Barclays Additions accounts are entitled to a free will. When the Bank is named as executor it will, if required, hold the will in safe custody free of charge.
The Estate Administration service is separate from the Will Writing service. If Barclays Estates prepares a will, you do not have to use them as executors. Your will does not have to be drawn up by the Will Writing service for you to use the Estate Administration service.
TRUSTS AND LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPA) - Barclays Estates and Trusts Company also deals with these but there are no staff or pensioner fee concessions.
-4-
WHOM TO CONTACT - Barclays Estate and Trusts Company is based in Northwich, which is ideal for Bank pensioners in our area but there is coverage across England and Wales by locally based staff who specialise in either estate administration or trusts.

CHRISTMAS LUNCH AND REUNION
A record attendance of 350 attended the lunch on 7th December 2010 with 380 applications. The meal and service were of a high standard and I am sure everyone attending enjoyed the day.
It was, of course, a very good day to be at the cricket club [and appropriately in the Ashes suite] as England had earlier that day just beaten Australia in the 2nd test of the Ashes series.
Date for diary- this year's lunch is Tuesday 6th December 2011 again at Old Trafford Cricket Club.

The House, was built in the mid-18th century and has magnificent interiors by Robert Adam, furniture by Thomas Chippendale and a collection of paintings, furniture and porcelain. The Terrace provides stunning views of Capability Brown's landscaped estate. Harewood also won awards for "Enjoy England's Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2009" and "Yorkshire in Bloom winners 2010". There are hundreds of exotic birds and a penguin pool in the Bird Garden; meals or snacks can be enjoyed in the tearooms & restaurants nd there are ample picnic spots by the lake or in the extensive gardens.
Before we reach Harewood, we'll be visiting Harrogate, famous for its Victorian & Turkish Baths and Health Spa, where you'll be able to explore the shops, galleries anduseums or just relax with tea or coffee in one of the many cafés.
On our way home, we'll be calling at the "Wetherby Whaler" Restaurant in Wakefield for a sit-down meal. If fish & chips aren't to your taste, there are salads and a vegetarian dish of the day. We hope to be back in Knutsford by 8.15pm.

DO YOU WANT A PART TIME JOB
I have received a letter from a company called one2One who are looking for ex bankers to work part time for them in Salford Quays. In fact one of our pensioners already does this and this is why they have approached us.
They carry out Business Development work for a number of blue chip clients in the accountancy, banking and insurance industry and are looking to expand their client base in these high value service sectors. They need people who are capable of holding a conversation with business owners and directors, who can handle objections and have the experience to recognise opportunity when they hear it! The working day can be varied and challenging -- one minute talking to business owners about whether they wish to sell their business, the next talking to a Financial Director asking if their bank is being supportive and offering a financial review.
If you are interested, or want more information then please telephone Ian Willis on 07739 519523 or go to their website at www.121customerinsight.co.uk
